Burton
Vision
In 1977, Jake Burton, founder and CEO of the Burton Snowboard Company, dreamed how big snowboarding could be. Burton has now become the largest snowboarding brand in the world and sells in over 4,000 doors worldwide and over 1,500 locations in the US alone. Burton has grown to own 10 companies that market snowboards, helmets, optics, outerwear, apparel, footwear, and surfboards. Those companies include brands such as Red Protection, Gravis Footwear, Anon Optics, Analog Apparel, Forum and Jeenyus Snowboards, Special Blend and Foursquare Technical Outerwear, and most recently, Channel Islands surfboard company. Soldier has worked with Burton since 2003 on a host of diverse initiatives for many of their privately held brands, all bringing strength to the overall Burton corporation portfolio.
Mechanics
Soldier’s work with Burton dates back to 2003, where in true-to-form approach, Soldier takes on diverse mission-critical assignments where the stakes are high and clear definition and empowerment is needed for success. Projects with Burton range from rebranding initiatives to large scale retail transformation. When Burton needed to stand out in distinction at trade shows, Soldier redefined a complete retail experiences by creating a unified design language for an 8,500 sq/ft. mobile environment that would house and discern five different brands under one Burton umbrella, reconciling over 1,200 product SKUs in men’s, women’s, and kid’s categories. The goal was to ultimately position Burton as market leader within a crowded space of undistinguished snowboard brands vying for attention in the B2B tradeshow circuit.
Soldier also worked with international senior management teams on a holistic, multi-year, re-branding initiative for Burton’s Red Protection brand through Soldier’s Brandseeking® framework to uncover the plot-power of “Ride Forever,” driving advertising, packaging, digital and retail for the growing and highly profitable category, which segued into a two-year strategic initiative with The Program brands (Forum, Special Blend, and Foursquare) to audit and clearly define their purpose and expression in relationship to each other and within the marketplace. Strategic brand plans were created for each brand that informed innovative product creation and dynamic marketing communication, including product superiority commercial spots.
Influence
Whether realigning or empowering brands at Burton, RED Protection, or The Program brands the transformative efforts have halo effects that extend across the entire company, helping drive Burton’s brand expression and profits to new heights. Since implementing vitality into the RED Protection brand, it has grown more than 15% a year ultimately being brought closer into the Burton brand itself, and equaling more funding and creative expression. Soldier’s efforts around product creation and communication with Burton’s Forum boot business increased sales upwards of 38% per year, while the strategic brand and marketing efforts around The Program brands overall has helped Burton to determine which businesses to invest in, which to exit from, and where to innovate moving forward.
